Four stranded tourists rescued on Table Mountain after missing last cable car

A late-night rescue operation on Table Mountain saw four international tourists safely escorted down the mountain after missing the last cable car due to strong winds on Tuesday evening.

Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR), together with SANParks rangers from Table Mountain National Park, were dispatched to the upper cable station after two visiting hikers, a 34-year-old from Britain and a 29-year-old from the United States — became stranded.

WSAR said the pair had crossed the mountain from Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden but were unable to descend when the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway suspended operations because of high winds.

While rescue teams were making their way up Platteklip Gorge, WSAR said two additional hikers, aged 27 and 29 from Turkey, arrived at the upper cable station shelter after traversing the mountain from Kasteelspoort above Camps Bay.

All four hikers were found safe, though cold, and were provided with warm jackets and torches. Rescue teams then guided the group down the popular Platteklip Gorge trail under clear skies and calm conditions, offering stunning nighttime views of the city below.

The operation concluded just after midnight, with all hikers and rescuers safely off the mountain by 12:15 am on Wednesday.

WSAR said the incident highlights the importance of proper planning for late-afternoon hikes on Table Mountain. Visitors are advised to start earlier in the day, check weather forecasts, carry extra warm clothing, and confirm cable car operating times before setting out.

Wilderness Search and Rescue praised the coordinated response and professionalism of all teams involved, noting that their dedication continues to support tourism and ensure the safety of those exploring the Western Cape’s natural attractions.
