The Democratic Alliance (DA) is mourning the passing of Errol Knott Moorcroft, former Federal Chairperson of the Democratic Party, whose decades-long dedication to South Africa’s democratic journey left an indelible mark on the nation.

“A dedicated servant of South Africa’s democratic journey and a respected figure within our party and across the political landscape,” John Steenhuisen, the leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) said.

Born in January 1940 into a farming family, Moorcroft combined his deep love for the land with a commitment to public service.

He was educated at Queen’s College, Grootfontein Agricultural College, where he was elected a student leader and Rhodes University, before earning an Abe Bailey scholarship to Oxford University, where he excelled academically and athletically, winning a blue for rugby.

Moorcroft’s political career began in earnest in 1981, when he was elected as the Progressive Federal Party member for Albany. He later served in the Senate following South Africa’s transition to democracy, eventually rising to the position of Federal Chairperson in 1997.

Over his tenure, he returned to the National Assembly. He retired from politics in 2004 to farm once again at Clifton Farm near Adelaide.

“His leadership and wisdom, always tinged with self-deprecating humour, offered a beacon within the party and for others across the political spectrum,” Steenhuisen added.

Colleagues remember him not only for his political acumen but also for his warmth, humility, and the way he inspired others to serve South Africa with integrity. Moorcroft’s connection to nature and education remained a defining part of his life.

Fluent in isiXhosa, he championed inclusive engagement and brought a lifelong appreciation for the environment to his parliamentary work.

“On behalf of the Democratic Alliance, I extend my deepest condolences to EK’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Steenhuisen added that while Moorcroft will be missed.
