Outdated CV, secrecy and tensions: McBride clashes with MPs in Parliament

Former Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) head Robert McBride came under fire in Parliament after submitting an outdated curriculum vitae (CV), laughing and making faces during proceedings, while refusing to disclose his current employment.

Testifying at the Ad Hoc Committee on Tuesday, McBride acknowledged that the CV before the committee was old, saying he had been unable to locate an updated version in time for the hearing.

The admission immediately drew criticism from MPs, who questioned his preparedness and respect for the process.

Tensions escalated further when McBride declined to reveal where he currently works.

“I am not allowed to say what my employment is,” he told the committee, citing restrictions under the National Strategic Intelligence Act of 1994, but offering no further explanation.

Several MPs said the refusal undermined transparency in a high-stakes inquiry.

MK Party MP Sibonelo Nomvalo condemned the submission of an outdated CV, saying the conduct “cannot remain unchallenged” and reflected contempt for parliamentary oversight.

“This cannot remain unchallenged… It must be condemned with the contempt it deserves,” Nomvalo said.

ActionSA MP Dereleen James pressed McBride on why he could not disclose his role if he was employed by the state, and objected to what she described as dismissive gestures and facial expressions while members were questioning him.

ANC MP Xola Nqola echoed the criticism, calling on McBride to show respect for the committee to ensure an orderly and credible process.

As exchanges grew heated, committee chairperson Soviet Lekganyane intervened to restore order and allow proceedings to continue.

McBride, a former ANC Member of Parliament, confirmed he remains a member of the governing party.
