Traffic officials in Limpopo have intercepted an unroadworthy bus on the N1 highway, en route to Gauteng, citing serious safety and compliance violations.
The Polokwane Traffic Control Centre (PTCC) stopped the bus on Sunday after officers identified multiple irregularities during an inspection near Polokwane.
According to the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, the bus was travelling from Malawi when it was found to be operating with a copied licence disc that did not correspond with the vehicle identification number on the manufacturer’s plate.
Officials also established that the bus’s operating licence had expired on 31 July 2025.
Further compounding the risk, officers discovered that two wheels on the driving axle were missing, rendering the vehicle unroadworthy and “posing a serious danger” to passengers and other road users.
The driver and the operator are expected to face further investigation and possible action.
The department reiterated its commitment to road safety and urged public transport operators to comply with all regulatory requirements.
Members of the public are encouraged to report suspicious or unsafe vehicles to authorities via the toll-free number 0800 006 694.
The department said ongoing road safety operations would continue across the province to ensure compliance and protect road users.
In December, reported that traffic authorities intercepted an overloaded cross-border bus travelling from Gauteng to Malawi on the N1 bypass near Polokwane.
The 65-seater bus was stopped at about 9 am on December 18, adjacent to the Peter Mokaba Stadium, after officers observed that it was severely overloaded.
According to the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, the bus was carrying a total of 117 occupants — comprising one driver, 101 passengers and 15 minors — exceeding its legal capacity by 52 passengers.
