Crew members of the Silver Dorado squid fishing vessel made a miraculous escape on Monday evening deep off the coast of Gqeberha. A fire broke out while the Silver Dorado was conducting its operations at sea.
The vessel, owned by Talhado, was reportedly engaged in squid fishing when the emergency broke out. Fortunately, all crew members, including skipper Sean Gushwindt, were successfully evacuated thanks to the swift and coordinated response of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), supported by nearby vessels.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined, with the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) being formally notified and initiating an urgent investigation into the incident. Talhado has voiced its commitment to fully cooperate with SAMSA and all relevant authorities to determine what led to this potentially life-threatening situation.
Thanks to the professionalism and rapid actions of the NSRI, there were no injuries reported amongst the crew, who are now safely back on land.
