The iconic Kenilworth Racecourse will be transformed into a brilliant spectacle of blue and white for the eagerly awaited L’Ormarins King’s Plate on Saturday.
Now in its historic 165th edition, this prestigious Grade 1 racing event has firmly established itself as a highlight of the summer calendar.
The atmosphere is set to be electrifying, with 14 of South Africa’s elite middle-distance thoroughbreds lining up for a chance to claim victory. Among the contenders, eight horses have previously won Grade 1 races, promising an intensely competitive day ahead.
The L’Ormarins King’s Plate is celebrated not only for the thrilling racing but also for the elegant social atmosphere. Fashioned to showcase the best of Cape Town’s culture, the event invites attendees to indulge in a luxurious day out, with stylish outfits and extravagant hats adorning the grounds.
All eyes will be on the promising three-year-old Jan van Goyen. This horse has captured the imagination of racing enthusiasts following an impressive performance in a Grade 1 race in December.
Despite a few setbacks on the day, Jan van Goyen demonstrated remarkable talent and determination to storm through a competitive field, proving he is a superstar in the making. Having handled the pressure with grace, he has paved the way for what looks to be another significant win with a favourable draw on Saturday.
Among the other contenders, Dave the King stands out as a strong competitor. He showed tremendous heart in his last outing, securing a win in a gripping race that showcased his speed. With a good draw, the long-striding pace-presser could prove a difficult opponent for Jan van Goyen, especially if he can maintain his form from the Grade 2 Ridgemont Green Point Stakes. However, his last race revealed potential vulnerabilities, particularly if he finds himself engaged in a fast-paced duel with his rival, Legal Counsel.
Garrix also merits attention, having faced misfortune in the Green Point Stakes. He was unlucky with the timing of the gaps and still managed to clinch second place, hinting at his potential to shine given the right circumstances. Punters should not underestimate his natural talent; he may well turn his luck into a victory this time.
Eighteen on Eight brings a pedigree of class after a commendable performance in the Grade 1 Hollywoodbets Durban July. His capability over middle distances is unquestionable, yet the break and the somewhat shorter 1,600m trip could be a challenging adjustment. The question remains: can he return to form without needing a re-acclimatisation period?
Then there is Questioning, an enigma of a horse whose performance in the Grade 3 Race Coast Matchem Stakes was jaw-dropping. However, his form over 1,600m is uncertain, complicating predictions. Sail the Seas is another formidable contender, having triumphed over Eighteen on Eight in their last encounter. His training regimen has been smooth since recovering from injury and, with a good draw, he may well soar to victory.
Finally, one cannot overlook The Real Prince. Although he showed signs of rust in his last outing, his impressive track history places him amongst the elite. Trainer Dean Kannemeyer is confident in his horse’s readiness.
The programme features two additional Grade 1 showpieces: the Cartier Paddock Stakes, showcasing the best fillies and mares, and the explosive World Pool Cape Flying Championship, promising blistering speed and thrilling finishes.
