Following his fiery return to action in Cape Town earlier this week, Joburg Super Kings fast bowler Nandre Burger looks a major threat to MI Cape Town ahead of their clash at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg today.
Burger has sat out four of the six games the Joburg Super Kings have played so far this season, as the left-arm quick monitored a hamstring injury picked up during South Africa’s second ODI against India last month. The fast bowler returned to play in Cape Town earlier this week and showed no signs of rustiness, bowling at high pace as if he had never been sidelined with a serious injury just weeks prior.
The paceman took the wickets of opening batter Rassie van der Dussen and number three Nicholas Pooran, helping the visiting Joburg Super Kings compete against a strong MI Cape Town outfit in a rain-affected encounter at Newlands.
The 31-year-old returned figures of 2/23 in three overs, sending a clear message to the Proteas selectors who left him out of the squad for the upcoming 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next month.
On Saturday, the quick is set to play his first game at home, following the abandoned fixture against the Paarl Royals at “the Bullring” on Thursday, and he will certainly be looking to impress in front of the home crowd.
However, he will face steep competition, as the likes of Ryan Rickelton and Van der Dussen also have points to prove after being omitted from the Proteas’ World Cup squad.
MI Cape Town are currently a difficult team to pin down, having lost four out of six games so far in a season where they were expected to defend their maiden SA20 trophy.
They secured their first victory of the season against the Joburg Super Kings earlier this week and will head into Saturday’s clash backing themselves for another win and a potential spot in the knockout stages, given their star-studded squad.
The two sides are set to clash at 5:30pm today, with MI Cape Town looking to lift themselves from the bottom of the table, while the Joburg Super Kings aim to retain top spot in the standings.
