Battle over ANC-branded bakkie now forms part of police probe

FORMER ANC provincial secretary Neville Delport has denied that he is still in possession of one of the party’s branded bakkies after his former colleagues lodged a criminal complaint against him.

Police on Thursday confirmed a case of vehicle theft was registered against Delport at Piketberg police on Monday.

“The complainant alleges that the vehicle was booked in a garage in Worcester and the suspect removed it from the garage without permission and has been using it since July 2025. No arrest has been made yet; the matter is under investigation,” said provincial police spokesperson, Ndakhe Gwala.

The ANC in the Western Cape said Delport remained in possession of the party’s bakkie and failed to return it even after defecting to the  in November last year.

Since then, he has been in “unlawful possession” of the bakkie, Western Cape spokesperson, Sifiso Mtsweni.

“He has ignored repeated requests to return the bakkie to the ANC Western Cape. The ANC has been left with no choice but to open a criminal case against Mr Delport whose nostalgia of the ANC has now become criminal to a point where he believes that assets belonging to the ANC are his personal acquisitions. We expect SAPS to deal with this matter urgently.”

However, Delport told the Cape Times on Thursday that the bakkie was not in his possession and accused the ANC of “sour grapes”.

“I never drove that bakkie. During the Bonnievale by-elections and the celebrations, I left the bakkie. There were some mechanical errors on the bakkie, so the candidate took the bakkie to a mechanic in Worcester. For the last two months, the bakkie has been there, that’s why I went to the police yesterday.

|If you say the bakkie is in my possession, did you go and check my house, check where the bakkie is, come with evidence. Don’t spread lies about me. Your fight with me is about me leaving the ANC for the DA. The bakkie is not in my possession, it’s unroadworthy and the license (disc) expired two years ago. So what would I do with the bakkie?”

He said the case was an attempt by the ANC to derail his work ahead of a crucial  by-election in Graafwater.
