South African award-winning actress Masasa Mbangeni has reached another proud moment in her life after officially graduating with an honours degree in dramatic arts from the University of the Witwatersrand. Known and loved for her unforgettable role as Thembeka Shezi on Scandal!, Masasa is now a two-time Wits graduate — and she’s not stopping anytime soon.
The actress took to Instagram to share the exciting news, expressing deep pride and joy about her achievement. In a video posted to her Instagram Stories, she introduced herself by saying, “Hi, I am Masasa Mbangeni, a proud holder of a BADA Honours from the Wits School of the Arts and now a two-time Wits graduate. This is a dream come true for me. Even being on the Wits socials is a dream come true.”
Masasa also revealed that her academic journey is far from over. She confidently declared, “And I promise you, I will be back to get my masters and my PhD because I am a Witsie for life.” Her message showed how passionate she is about education and personal growth, inspiring many of her supporters.
Celebrating the big day, Masasa shared emotional posts about how her family and friends showed up in a beautiful way. She wrote, “My friends surprised me by flying in to attend my graduation! There are no words!” In another post, she expressed how much her family means to her, saying, “The reason for everything. My family. They came out in their numbers today. All of my people show up every time.”
Masasa is widely recognised for her powerful portrayal of the villainous Thembeka Shezi on Scandal!, a role that earned her two consecutive South African Film and Television Award nominations for Best Actress in a TV Soap in 2014 and 2015. She won the award in 2015, securing her place as one of South Africa’s top talents.
After leaving Scandal! in 2016 to explore new opportunities, Masasa continued to shine. She took on a leading role in season two of the SABC2 thriller Thola and more recently appeared in the hit Netflix series Blood & Water, proving her versatility and staying power in the industry.
