KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi has clarified the land dispute between the AbaKhwanazi and Ncube clans in Mtubatuba, KwaZulu-Natal.
The dispute centres on Dukuduku, where Qiniso Ncube — appointed by Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini as an overseer — has been presenting himself as the chief.
Speaking during an imbizo convened by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in Dukuduku, MEC Buthelezi stated that the land in question belongs to the AbaKhwanazi clan and that Ncube has not been appointed chief.
“The villages at the centre of the controversy — Dukuduku, Khulanobathiya and Zwelisha — fall under Chief Ntokozo Mkhwanazi,” Buthelezi said. “No one was appointed by the King as chief. The person appointed as overseer was meant to await clarification on his role, not hold meetings or refer to himself as chief.”
Buthelezi further emphasised that the King has never conferred the chieftaincy on Ncube.
“We are here to state clearly that the King would never act unlawfully. Anyone referring to themselves as chief without proper appointment is acting unlawfully,” he said.
