Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has appointed former ANC Youth League activist and political communicator Sithembiso Mshengu as his official spokesperson to handle all the queries related to the Madlanga Commission.
Mchunu, announced the appointment on Wednesday, saying all media queries related to his testimony and political matters will now be handled exclusively by Mshengu.
“The Minister of Police who is on special leave, Senzo Mchunu, an ANC NEC and NWC member has appointed Sithembiso Mshengu, with effect from November 5, 2025, to be his personal spokesperson and to manage all media queries on his behalf for the duration of his preparation and appearance in the Madlanga Commission.
“He will also cover all matters related to his recent appearance before the Ad Hoc Committee, and all other related political matters currently,” the statement read.
The decision comes as the minister faces growing pressure over allegations raised at the commission probing alleged misconduct and governance failures within the police ministry.
Mchunu is accused of being in cahoots with notorious gang members who allegedly use his influence to manipulate the police and judiciary.
Mshengu, once a prominent ANC Youth League figure in KwaZulu-Natal, rose to political prominence as a spokesperson for a faction that successfully challenged the ANC’s provincial leadership in court in 2017.
He later became a vocal supporter of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s campaign for the ANC presidency.
Although no longer a member of the KZN Provincial Legislature since May 2024, Mshengu remains an active ANC member.
Earlier this year, he was embroiled in a political dispute over his removal from the board of the Independent Development Trust (IDT), a social infrastructure agency overseen by the Public Works Ministry.
Meanwhile, Mchunu is expected to appear before the commission to explain his side of the story on the political interference allegations in the SAPS and judiciary.
