Reading manager Brian McDermott has revealed that Wolves have made an approach for club captain Matthew Mills, which was rejected.

Both Wolves and Stoke are reportedly hoping to sign the central defender, who scored in Reading’s playoff final defeat to Swansea in May.

But McDermott says he does not want to sell his captain, telling The Chronicle: “We’ve had an offer from Wolves for Matt Mills which we turned down.

“It was way off our valuation and that was that.

“I don’t know if they will come back for more – they may do – but I don’t want to encourage clubs to bid for our players either.

“That’s not part of my agenda. I want to keep our squad together, and add to it if possible.”

Mills moved to the Madejski Stadium two years ago in a £2 million deal from Doncaster, and his impressive performances in the Championship have drawn the attentions of Premier League clubs.

If reports are to be believed, the rejected offer from Wolves was worth £3m.

But Mick McCarthy will have to up his bid if he is to have any chance of taking the central defender away from Reading.
