David Ngobua 30 June 2011 Daily morning rains For residents of Port-Harcourt, there is nothing unusual about the heavy rain that falls every morning but for those who are visitors to the city, it is a source of concern. Indications are strong that most of the events especially outdoor games like football, hockey, cycling, golf, and handball may suffer the most as there are fears that matches would not be played according to schedule. For instance, the heavy down pour yesterday almost stopped cycling from holding as competitors, their officials and members of the technical committee were forced to take cover in nearby buildings.

Port Harcourt — Assistant coach of Edo State gymnastics team, Oni Erhunmwunse yesterday said nothing will stop his state from retaining its dominance of the event as he said there is going to be stiff opposition but in the end, Edo will come up tops.

Speaking to Trustsports at the Civic Centre which is the venue for Gymnastics, the coach said states like Lagos, Ekiti, Delta, Ogun and the host state, Rivers are potential threats to Edo State’s ambition to retain its hold on the event but in the end, they would all be subdued.

The coach maintained that the coach of Rivers State is talking tough and as a lot has been reported about his exploits in the game but he is waiting to see what the Rivers State coach will offer in the end.

Erhunmwunse stated that except they have gotten their players from another planet, Rivers should not dream of toppling Edo State in gymnastics.

The coach said his team made up of four male and four female gymnasts is in Port Harcourt to retain its medals haul at the last edition of the sports festival.

He however regretted that at least three events would not hold because the centre where the competition is going to hold lacks the needed facilities.

“We are here to win all the medals at stake. Some states like Lagos, Delta, Ogun, Ekiti, and Rivers are strong contenders but they will not stop us from winning the medals at stake.

“I learnt that the coach of Rivers State team is talking tough but I am waiting to see what he has to offer. I don’t know where he has gotten his players but when competition begins, we shall see what he has to show”.
