Kampala — In choosing hooker Alex Mubiru to lead the Rugby Cranes against Zimbabwe in the return leg of the Victoria Cup on Saturday, team management might get vindication because of his spirit. Even if it’s a forced decision instigated by the absence of captain Mathias Ochwo (injury) and his deputy Timothy Mudoola (work), Mubiru loves the responsibility.

“Leading Heathens over the past two years helps me a lot in knowing what’s expected,” Mubiru said in reference to his duties at club level with MTN Heathens. “I am very positive since this team is going with a good attitude.” The team leaves today morning. He was captain when Uganda won the Plate at the Kenya Safari 7s five years ago and has also led the national team at under-19 level.

Nonetheless, this is his biggest challenge. His assistant Evans Kingasia also has only two national caps under his belt. “Away games need character and the message to every player is to stand tall,” Mubiru added.

On Tuesday, the team was hit by the news of the withdrawals of flanker Robert Seguya, centre Tony Luggya and fullback Simon Wakabi due to work commitments. Allan Musoke and utility back Anthony Kinene also opted out.
