The government is exploring the modalities of setting up a fruit processing factory in Makueni, Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has announced.

Addressing public rallies on Monday at Kyambeke, Kalamba and Emali townships, Kalonzo noted that the region’s high production of mangoes, bananas and citrus fruits necessitated the establishment of the plant. “With such a factory, you will be able to process the excess fruits produced here, and that way, improve your economic base” Kalonzo said.

He said the government is determined to cushion Kenyans from the effects of the recent sharp rise of the cost of living and called for patience as it puts in place the necessary measures. “Recently, the government reduced the cost of kerosene and it is in the process of implementing other measures to ensure that our people are shielded from the effects of the current drought and the rising cost of living,” Kalonzo said.

He attributed the rising cost of living and falling of the local currency against major currencies to drought in the country, as well as the conflicts in the Arabian and North African states which has affected the cost of crude oil.
