IN its bid to decongest Calabar metropolis, as well as develop new areas for the expansion of the city to tackle acute accommodation problems, Cross River State government has awarded a N3.7 billion contract for a six-kilometre dual carriageway in the outskirts of Calabar. The road, which is a by-pass, is expected to be completed within 24 months. It will help solve traffic problems and blocked roads phenomenon, especially at Christmas season

Massawa — The Minister of Education, Mr. Semere Russom, stressed the paramount importance of education and hard work in efforts to promote social justice and eradicate poverty and backwardness.

In a meeting with department heads of the Northern Red Sea regional Administration, Education Ministry’s branch offices and partners, he indicated that substantial investment is being made to develop the education sector, and that tangible outcome is being borne.

Mr. Semere explained that the Government disbursed over 240 million dollars since 2003 towards expanding educational opportunities. Besides, about 24 million Nakfa has been allocated for putting in place well-equipped laboratory facilities in all high schools, he elaborated. The Minister went on to say that schools in remote areas have become beneficiaries of computers and laboratories through installing solar power.

Also in line with endeavors to upgrade the competence of teachers, a total of 2,000 elementary school teachers graduated in diploma following distance learning program over the past two years. About 1,400 teachers would also graduate in the coming months, Mr. Semere elaborated.
