Lee Addy claims he is innocent at Red Stars accusations

Ghana defender Lee Addy has expressed shock at Red Star Belgrade’s decision to take disciplinary action against him for allegedly refusing to report for pre-season.

Reports emerged last Sunday that the Ghana defender was given a deadline of midnight on Monday to join his teammates or face a disciplinary action at Fifa or Uefa.

The centre-back claims he had explained to a club official about his malaria illness and forwarded his medical reports to club for verification.

Addy believes he has done no wrong and has been taken aback by reports of his truancy and malingering.

“I explained to them I’ve malaria and they understood perfectly. So I’m undergoing malaria treatment and I will go back afterwards,” Addy told Accra-based radio station Asempa FM.

“I was very shocked when people started to call me and ask me about it. There was nothing like that. There is only one Red Star official who understands English so when I heard it I called to ask him and he said there’s nothing like that.”

Red Star also accused him of refusing to answer several calls from the coach and legend of the club Robert Proscineski since he failed to turn up.

Addy was banished to the club’s reserves after failing to arrive early from the Ghana-England friendly at Wembley in March.
