Carlos Tevez

“I just hope Carlos reflects on the season, reflects on the fact we are going to be playing Champions League football and thinks ‘this is something I want to be part of’.

“You would like to think Manchester City is going to be an interesting place over the next few years.”

Goal.com’s Verdict

It’s been a surprisingly inauspicious start to the summer for the richest club in the world and the most important element of Manchester City’s close season will be how they handle Carlos Tevez’s future.

It is no secret that the Argentine striker wants to leave but with few clubs interested in the £50m and his £200,000-a-week wage demands, it is looking increasingly likely that he will stay for one more season.

If he does leave, the key to City’s summer will be how they replace their top scorer and talisman, with Inter star Samuel Eto’o mooted in Italy as a potential target having declared his desire to play in the Premier League.

Should Tevez stay, then manager Roberto Mancini will look to add three or four players to strengthen his squad at he prepares City for their debut season in the Champions League.

Udinese winger Alexis Sanchez is the club’s priority at the moment and chief executive Garry Cook has tabled a £33m bid as City look to beat Barcelona and Chelsea to the Chilean flyer’s signature. If City miss out on Sanchez, then Juan Mata of Valencia is likely to emerge as an alternative target.

Despite their Abu Dhabi billions, City are well aware of the potential impact of Uefa’s financial fair play rules and are desperate to sell fringe players on high wages such as Emmanuel Adebayor, Craig Bellamy and Wayne Bridge.

Mancini is keen to add a centre-back to compete with Vincent Kompany, Kolo Toure and Joleon Lescott and will turn to Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen if he missed out on Bolton’s Gary Cahill.
