The Gambia Press Union (GPU), the body responsible for the affairs of the journalists in The Gambia, yesterday elected its new executive, at a triennial congress held at the Gambia Telecommunications Multimedia Institute (GTMI) in Kanifing.

The election of the new executive followed the elapse of the three-year mandatory term of the outgoing executive. The congress was centered on the theme, ‘Strengthening the GPU’ and it created a platform for the members of the union to discuss wide-range of issues such as the background of the formation of the union and its role as an organization. Also during the congress members were given the opportunity to review and adopt the current constitution of the union with a view to strengthening its role.

Bai Emil Touray from Foroyaa newspaper was elected president of the union, whilst Baboucarr Ceesay from The Daily News was elected 1st vice-president. Amie Sanneh from Foroyaa was elected 2nd vice-president, whilst Gibairu Janneh from the Daily Observer was elected as the secretary general of the union. Madi Njie, a freelance journalist and Lamin Njie from The Daily News were elected 1st and 2nd assistant secretaries general respectively.

Hadijatou Jawara, from The Market Place Magazine was elected treasurer, whilst Sarjo Camara Singhateh from Foroyaa and Saikou Ceesay from The Daily News were respectively elected as co-opted members of the union.
