The Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) disciplinary committee has delivered its verdict on three players summoned for a hearing on June 21 after they were charged of infringing the body’s regulations.
Team captain Samuel Eto’o, who was arraigned for shunning a training session prior to the June 4 Afcon qualifier against Senegal (0-0) and for meddling in coach Javier Clemente’s substitution of a player during the encounter, was acquitted after the Spaniard testified via telephone in his favour.
Clemente told the judges he had given the Inter forward permission from training, and that a misunderstanding with a linesman during Choupo-Moting’s substitution led to Eto’o’s brief intervention, which was far from any interference.
Arsenal midfielder Alex Song, summoned for an “attitude of contempt” towards Samuel Eto’o, when he rebuffed Eto’o’s handshake in a Yaounde hotel the group was staying at during preparations for the Senegal match, was slapped with a 1 million francs CFA (£1330) fine, which was converted to a three-day community service of sporting interest, demanding the player to carry out several field exercises with pupils of a football academy.
Represented by a lawyer during the hearing, Tottenham’s Benoit Assou-Ekotto needed to explain why he failed to honour a call up for the qualifier and why he did not notify the FA of any difficulties.
He was severely reprimanded for an unauthorised absence in camp ahead of an important match.
