Wolves are reportedly set to turn their attentions to Manchester United defender Jonny Evans as frustration grows over attempts to sign other defensive reinforcements.

Manager Mick McCarthy has been foiled in his efforts to land transfer targets Matt Mills from Reading and Roger Johnson from Birmingham, and has now decided on a shock swoop for Jonny Evans, according to The Daily Mail.

The 24-year-old Evans has grown frustrated at Old Trafford after failing to break the partnership of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand he has now fallen down the pecking order behind Chris Smalling and new signing Phil Jones.

United are reportedly ready to release their defensive fringe players such as John O’Shea and Wes Brown, and Wolves believe they could be tempted to sell Evans, too.

An offer of around £7 million could be enough to tempt the Premier League champions into a deal, though it remains to be seen if the player would make the move to the Midlands outfit.

McCarthy tried to sign Evans two years ago while he was on loan at Sunderland, and the Ulsterman may favour a similar loan move in order to gain regular first-team action.
