LAKE Zone has emerged overall winners at the Inter-Secondary School Games, UMISSETA, which climaxed here on Friday after scooping 54 points.

Team Lake Zone, which held fifth position during last year’s event, was one of the best sides in terms of talent and competence this time around and deservedly leaped to the top.

They finished top winners in volleyball, both, boys and girls categories; athletics (boys), basketball (boys) and finished runners-up in handball (boys and girls categories) and athletics (girls).

Lake Zone Coordinator, Joab Mushuba attributed the team’s success to the athletes’ team work spirit and proper training.

“We have worked an extra mile from the fifth position last year to overall winners. I should congratulate the students for the job well done and we are prepared to perform even better next year,” he said.

As the Lake Zone celebrated their remarkable success, defending champions, North Western failed to attain the same feat as they settled for fourth position behind Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.

The Southern Zone, who finished bottom on the ranking table in the previous edition, earned a special accolade this year whereas, the zone coordinator, Shaaban H. Basha was decorated with a golden medal for raising the zone’s standard.

The organising committee recognised the zone’s efforts where it improved from 12nd position to ninth with good show particularly in traditional game, bao.

Closing the games, Coast Regional Commissioner, Hajjat Amina Mrisho Saidi commended the winners and urged them to train hard and remain disciplined in order to remain good athletes.

She issued an uplifting message to losing teams, challenging them to put on extra efforts so that they come out on top in the next edition.

Umisseta games included netball, handball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, athletics, bao and table tennis with more than 1300 students from 12 zones taking part.
