ABAKALIKI – THE Federal Ministry of Health has established four national centres, including the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Abakaliki, where analysis, control, and prevention of sickle cell disease would be given due attention in the South-South and South-East geopolitical zones.

Other centres include FMC Keffi, FMC Gombe and FMC Ebute-Meta.

The measure was necessary for the education of the general public in the zone who were still ignorant of the scope, nature and preventable strategies of the disease.

The Chief Medical Director of FMC, Abakaliki, Dr. Paul Ezeonu, who disclosed this yesterday during the World Sickle Cell Day organised by the Centre, noted that although sickle cell disease was yet to have any global cure, it was preventable.
