Graves within Nyanya Cemetery have been taken over by bushy grasses, making it difficult for families of deceased persons to locate their resting places.

Our reporter, who went to the place yesterday morning, saw a family looking at the grasses and wondering loudly how to move into the cemetery.

A part of the fence had been pulled down, while dirt and excreta littered the side of the place.

The cemetery appears to be the only one unkempt in the Federal Capital Territory as those at Gwarinpa and Apo are maintained by the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB).

In the past, officials of AEPB had put the blame on the Abuja Municipal Area Council, whom they said were responsible for the maintenance of the cemetery.

AEPB Spokesman, Samuel Musa, had directed our reporter to AMAC, where he was told that the council is doing everything possible to tidy the place.

Residents of Nyanya have called on the FCT Administration to hand over the maintenance of the place to AEPB, adding that the present state of the place constitute health hazard.

“It is wrong for a society to treat dead people in this manner and we should borrow a leaf from the European countries by visiting their cemeteries in order to have a change of mind,” stated Abdul Malik, a resident.
