Deputy Minister of Education David Namwandi has said drastic action will be taken against unruly and indisciplined students at the Mwadhina gwaNambenge Secondary School at Oshakati in the Oshana Region.

Namwandi paid a surprise visit to the school on Friday morning after reports of unruly behaviour, including alcohol abuse and bullying, at the school. It was reported last week that the principal of the school had to remove a group of 25 students from shebeens where they were found drinking alcohol and misbehaving.

“I came here on an unplanned visit to intervene after we heard that some of you behave like animals. Drinking alcohol at school premises and using other substances, beating up teachers and other disciplined learners,” Namwandi told the students.

He called on the unruly students to respect their teachers and that the education authorities will not tolerate the type of behaviour some students have been showing.

“We want children who want to learn and to develop themselves and not those like you with bad behaviour like you are showing me today,” an angry Namwandi said when some of the students laughed at him.

He then called those who were laughing to the front and asked them to apologise for what they have done to the principal, teachers and other pupils.

They were also ordered to go to the school with their parents this week.

The unruly students were then taken in a Police van to the Oshakati Police Station to be talked to and disciplined.
