Nakuru and Tetu half marathon champion Peter Wanjiru Kariuki emerged the winner of the Busia County half marathon that ended at the Busia Township Youth Polytechnic yesterday.
Kariuki achieved the rare feat when he breasted the tape in 1:02:56 seconds.
“I am happy to have emerged the winner despite Busia’s hot climatic condition. I took the lead after Moses Kigen pulled out and I never looked back,” he said, adding that he will take part in the Safaricom Lewa Marathon in Isiolo next week.
He was followed closely by Joseph Opati Macheo in 1:03:22 with Victor Kipchumba Rotich third in 1:03:32.
In the women’s category, Margaret Atodonyang, 27, from West Pokot took the title on her comeback to the race since 2005 when she took a break to have a baby. She won the Bilbao half marathon last last year.
Atodonyang led a pack of over 100 runners to finish first in 1:15:32, registering her personal best. Second place was Beatrice Toroitich from Rift Valley who clocked 1:15:46 with another West Pokot athlete Consolata Chemtai taking third in 1:17.05.
In the men’s 10km race Busia county student Eliud Kimeli took the title timing 29:51 seconds. He was followed by Alloys Otieno (31:20) and Leonard Obonyo (31:24).
The women’s 10km race was won by Buyosi form two student Caren Turas in 40:06 with Laini Lulu second in 43:02 while Celestine Misikhu came third in 44:50.
