press release
Germany is providing up to 200,000 Euro to Namibia for the current flood relief efforts. The German Foreign Office, for the second time since 2009, has assigned the task of humanitarian assistance in the aftermath of the floods in the North to the German Non-Governmental Organization “HUMEDICA International”.
Flood waters in the Namib Desert HUMEDICA took up their work, in co-operation with “Helping Hands Africa”, on May 20, 2011. A team of five, consisting of co-ordinators and medical staff, was sent to the flood-stricken regions in Northern Namibia. Oshakati Hospital received support in the form of basic medical assistance in the field. Furthermore, a donation comprising 230kg of medication was shipped to Namibia and is being distributed in the affected regions.
In order to prevent the outbreak of diseases and epidemics in the aftermath of the flood, HUMEDICA will continue to improve the living conditions of the flood victims by facilitating the distribution of food and non-food items such as soap, blankets, and mosquito nets. More than 1,000 families will systematically benefit from those relief supply measures.
On May 31, Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Marco Hausiku received the Chargé d’Affaires at the German Embassy, Mr. Matthias Hansen, and HUMEDICA’s disaster relief co-ordinator in the North, Mr. Jorg Eich, for a briefing on German humanitarian support to the flood victims.
