MAIDUGURI — Suspected members of the Yusufiyya sect popularly known as Boko Haram, Tuesday, shot dead the younger brother of the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, Abba Anas Umar Garbai El-Kanemi.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) ASP Lawal Abdullahi said Garbai El-Kanemi, 30, was killed in his residence at Gangamar, in Shehuri North in the Maiduguri metropolis about 9pm on Monday night, by some unidentified gunmen.
Abdullahi described the incident as unfortunate,vowing that the police would soon fish out the culprits and punish them in accordance with the law.
A member of the family of the deceased who preferred anonymity told Vanguard that he was in the Shehu’s palace when he received a call that Garbai El-Kanemi had been shot by unknown gunmen.
He said he immediately asked them to move to the scene in company of some policemen from the palace, adding that on getting there, they saw the deceased in a pool of blood.
According to the source,the body of Garbai El-Kanemi, a former security officer was later conveyed to the Shehu’s palace.
Meanwhile, thousands of sympathizers had started flocking into the palace to condole the Shehu after burying the deceased at the royal cemetery within the palace.
Among the early callers was the new Governor Kashim Shettima, who prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased.
Boko Haram members had targeted security officers, political leaders and clerics in a series of killings in the state in the last one year.
The Islamic fundamentalists had particularly also attacked churches as well as spear-headed massive prison revolt in the past.
