Members of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) Wednesday engaged in fisticuffs and vandalism at the Monrovia City Hall when some disaffected loyalists defected to the ruling Unity Party.

Party Secretary General Acarious Gray told a press conference Thursday that the violence, which culminated in the damage of several furniture at the City Hall, was sparked by the decision of the defectors to use the CDC logo.

Mr. Gray said it was a violation for any partisan to “illegally use the party’s logo for a motive that is counterproductive to the aims and aspirations of the CDC.”

“It (the use of the logo) is illegal. We realized that it was done under the cover of -daylight. It is a grave offense against the party,” Mr. Gray explained.

He said the party has put mechanisms in place in order to ensure adherence to the law, to arrest any similar situation.

“We are responsible to fight in defense of our logo, which is our navel string,” Mr Gray said to a tchorus of battle cries from CDC zealots at their headquarters.

He blamed former senior partisans for the new exodus, and described those who defected as “surrogates”.

Threatening that the party was capable of launching a counter attack on defected CDC supporters, Mr Gray said: “But we have chosen to work within the framework of the law”.
