Dar Es Salaam — The Athletics Tanzania (AT) technical committee will meet today to scrutinise the performances of athletes who might have broken national records during Saturday’s national championships in Dar es Salaam.

AT secretary-general Suleiman Nyambui said yesterday that the committee would also announce the national team that would take part in the East African championships.

Tanzania will host the regional track and field events scheduled to start on June 5 at the National Stadium that will also involve Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.

“We have plenty of international assignments ahead of us, but we have so far not yet come up with the national team,” said Nyambui.

He said the technical committee would select the best performers who would form the national team ahead of the forthcoming international assignments.

Apart from the regional event, those to be selected will also prepare for the World Championships to be held towards to the end of June in South Korea.

After the world event, the athletes will set their sights in the All Africa Games scheduled for early September in Maputo.Saturday’s national championships saw Mary Naali defeating veteran Restituta Joseph in a gruelling 10,000 metres race.

It was her second victory over Restituta, who has been running since early 1990s. In other races, Marko Joseph won the men’s 10,000m race before Joseph Martin outsprinted his opponents to win the 800m race.
