The Frenchman admitted himself as a precaution one week ago after suffering from chest pains and he has been under observation.
Houllier, who has been at Villa Park since September, was forced to undergo life-saving heart surgery in October 2001 when in charge of Liverpool.
But while it is not thought that he has required an operation after the latest scare, uncertainty remains regarding his long-term health.
Assistant manager Gary McAllister has taken temporary charge of Villa and will be in the dugout for Saturday’s trip to Midlands rivals West Brom.
Houllier is not expected to return before the end of the season and there is likely to be an important decision on whether he goes back to work amid his health concerns.
The 63-year-old has endured a difficult campaign back in Premier League management, although recent victories over Newcastle and West Ham have seen Villa climb away from relegation danger.
Houllier left Liverpool in May 2004 and had a two-year spell in charge of Ligue 1 outfit Lyon from 2005 to 2007 before taking a role with the French Football Federation prior to being tempted back into English football.
