Police in the Northern Region have warned NDC youth and some constituency executives in Walewale, in the West Mamprusi District against any attempt to resist a police escort for the DCE as he resumes work on Monday January 10.
The DCE for the area Lord Sulley Abudu Zakariah on January 5, 2011 escaped an assault attempt by some angry supporters of the NDC who went on a demonstration, calling for his immediate removal.
The constituency executives threatened to withdraw their services if the DCE, is not removed.
Citi News understands the Regional Minister has asked that a team of police escorts the DCE to his office.
The Secretary of the NDC in the district, Moses Sampa told Citi News that the youth will not hesitate to be violent in their quest to oppose the DCE’s presence in the district. But the Public Relations Officer for the Northern Regional Police Command, Emmanuel Tetteh says any youth who misbehaves will be severely dealt with according to the laws of the Land.
“The DCE for the Walewale District is a Ghanaian and if the police have to do anything to protect him, we will do it. We have indeed heard of the threat by the youth and what we are saying to them is that if they do anything against the law, they will be dealt with. We have been asked to give him protection and we are going to do so because he is a citizen of Ghana and a servant of the State. Anybody whose life is under threat and seeks police assistance will be given” he assured.
Meanwhile, Government has formed a special committee to investigate all the allegations levelled against metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives.
The establishment comes at the back of recent agitations by some irate NDC youth calling for the heads of their District Chief Executives, with the recent one being the threats by NDC activists in the Walewale constituency who have threatened to cause mayhem if the DCE for the area is returned to office by force.
Deputy Local Government and Rural Development Minister Mr Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, is secretary to the committee. Other members are NDC General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia; it’s National Chairman, Dr Kwabena Adjei; and other “very, very senior” government and party officials.
