Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, MP for ManhyiaThe Member of Parliament for the Manhyia constituency and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Director for election 2012, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh has debunked reports that he intends to stand as a presidential candidate for the party in 2016.

The Informer newspaper on Monday July 25 reported that the Manhyia MP has been bragging about former President Kufour endorsing him for the 2016 presidential primaries of the NPP.

But Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh has denied ever making such a statement.  Speaking on Asempa Fm’s current affairs programme, Ekosii Sen on Monday from London where he is currently on holiday, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, also affectionately called “NAPO” declared that he will serve the party and not individuals.

He expressed shock at the reports because according to him, he did not have any presidential ambitions for 2016.

According to the Manhyia MP, what he is rather thinking of is how to make the NPP flagbearer, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo win the 2012 elections adding he will never be ungrateful to Nana Addo after he ( Nana Addo) had honoured him by choosing him as the party’s Director of Elections for 2012.

He added that even President Kufour who it is being claimed has endorsed him for 2016 did not give him that position during his eight year rule as President of Ghana and wondered how he can turn his back on Nana Addo who has given him an appointment.

But speaking on the same platform, the Editor of the Informer newspaper, Andy Kankam insisted the story was true and warned Dr Opoku Prempeh not to dare him to mention names.

He said reliable sources told him the Manhyia MP is bragging that former President Kufour had endorsed him as the NPP’s candidate in the 2016 general elections.

He would however not disclose his sources.
