Claire Minter will lead the Zimbabwean golfers in the Regional All-Africa Challenge Tournament, which tees off tomorrow at Royal Harare Golf Club.
Experienced United States-based golfer Rumbidzai Masamvu and up-and-coming junior talent, Batsirai Tilowakuti, will compliment Minter in a strong combination for the country.
Golfers from South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Angola, Swaziland and host Zimbabwe will be taking part in the third edition of the tournament.
Five teams were expected to take part but Lesotho only managed to send two observers, their president Maseithati Nkeube, and official Makokelo Seturumane.
The Southern Africa regional trustee Nina Cloate is hopeful that the RAACT will provide a great platform for the golfers to shine.
“We expect the same tournament as the one hosted by Swaziland two years ago.
“Golf is a wonderful way of networking and making friends and we are all looking forward to the interaction the sport will provide in the beautiful country of Zimbabwe,” said Cloate.
The countries to take part in the Regional All-Africa Challenge Women’s Golf Team had their flags raised yesterday at Royal Harare to mark the official start of the tournament. The tournament is being hosted in Zimbabwe for the first time. Golf powerhouse South Africa will, as usual, be the major drawcard in the tournament that includes hosts Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and Lesotho, who will field a representative side.
The golfers, who had a practice round yesterday, will continue with their preparations today.
Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union president Thembi Moyo said they were happy to host the third edition of the tournament and expects every participant to enjoy her time on the course.
“I am delighted to be the third host for the Southern African RAACT event.
“Having had opportunity to learn from others it is my hope that your expectations will be exceeded.
“Zimbabwe will proudly present the first floating trophy for the RAAACT as I believe that a tournament of this magnitude contributes immensely to the development of golf in the region,” Moyo said.
