Roll Back Malaria Partnership (Geneva) 28 June 2011 press release A new analysis of progress in the global fight against malaria finds a four-fold increase in annual funding for malaria research and development (R&D) in just 16 years—increasing from US$121 million in 1993 to US$612 million in 2009, with a particularly rapid increase since 2004. The funding has generated the strongest pipeline of malaria control and prevention products in history. The report warns, however, that even a small decline in annual funding could jeopardize this pipeline, derail development of needed products, and paradoxically also increase development costs later.

Kampala — Uganda Professional Golfers Association captain Deo Akope is rallying his teammates to step up and shine in this year’s KCB East African Golf Tour.

Uganda Golf Club (UGC) will be hosting the third leg of the tour during the weekend of July 6-9 and Akope is demanding a better display than last year when he was the only local player with mention-worthy displays in the event. “There has been some hard work done by the guys and there is more commitment being shown. They know they have to deliver apart from flying the national flag, golf is also their job,” Akope said on Tuesday after UGC received Shs95m from KCB Bank as facilitation for hosting the showpiece.

KCB Bank earlier this year disclosed a sponsorship package of Kshs8.7m (Shs243m) for the tour. The package includes a bonus for the best-placed professionals and a prize purse of Kshs1m (an estimated Shs27m) for the Pro-Am golfers that will be drawn from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda legs.

“This tournament aims at promoting and maintaining the international standards of golf in the country and region at large,” said Martin Owiny, the KCB Uganda director. The eight-month long tour will culminate into a grand finale at the Nyali Golf and Country Club, Mombasa in Kenya.
