Residents of Kaloleni in Mombasa yesterday clashed with a private developer whom they accused of trying to construct a house on part of their land. The private developer, Mariam Omar, has dug a 42-foot septic tank next to her former house and erected a perimeter fence around it, but residents pulled it down in protest.
Bishara Shariff, a resident whose house will be affected by the construction of Omar’s house, said she acquired the title deed three years ago. “We finished paying instalments for this house three years ago. This house was established more than 70 years ago and we used to stay in it while paying rent to one Said Swaleh Nguru,” said Shariff. Mombasa DC Abdi Mohamed visited the area last month to asses the situation after residents first raised their concern.
Several meetings were then held between village elders, the local administration and residents to try and reach an amicable solution, but all efforts proved futile. Omar’s cousin Ali Saary, who jetted into the country a week ago from the Middle East, however condemned the residents’ actions. Saary blamed the municipal council for giving conflicting information to the different parties.
