Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas plans to keep John Terry as the club’s captain.

The centre-back has skippered the side since former manager Jose Mourinho gave him the duty in 2004 and currently has the role in the England squad under Fabio Capello.

The new Stamford Bridge boss has no intention of changing the captaincy, providing the 30-year-old makes the team sheet.

“John is the captain of this club and will continue to be, as long as he can perform to the utmost of his ability as he has in the last six years,” Villas-Boas was quoted as saying by The Sun.

“He has been successful in his captaincy for most of the time and he represents the successful history of this club in the last six or seven years.

“I know most of the players in the dressing room see John as a leader and a player who motivates them so, if John is in the team, he will be the captain.”

Terry was stripped of the England captaincy last year by Capello after allegations surrounding his private life, but regained the armband earlier this year after doubts over Rio Ferdinand’s long-term fitness.

The new Chelsea manager has stressed he wants players to keep out of trouble off the pitch and be role models, whilst adding that other members of the squad will be expected to show leadership too.

“We want them to triumph as persons, as social role models. When they do that, they triumph as players as well,” Villas-Boas continued.

“And if we find other leaders, more social role models, for sure they will have the captaincy as well, like Lamps Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba who have taken the captaincy in different games.

“Because in the end, it’s not a question of saying John is the only leader. There are lots of leaders in the dressing room.”
