He noted that contrary to the Daily Guide publication, the Controller and Accountant Generals Department has made payments into the various bank accounts of the workers.
The June 30th publication of the Daily Guide newspaper headlined Government is broke…Salaries delayed reported that the government does not have enough money to pay the several thousands of civil and public servants in the country.
The newspaper reported that its sources at the Controller and Accountant General’s Department confirmed that workers had not received their salaries and were unsure whether the workers would get their pay today.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday, Accountant General Mr. R.K. Tuffour noted that his department released the salaries of workers on Tuesday June 28, he therefore found it surprising that such a problem had erupted.
He said the delay may arise from the various banks of the workers.
The Controller and Accountant General urged the workers to check with their respective banks to confirm payments.
Commenting on the Daily Guide publication, Mr. R.K. Tuffour stated that the newspaper did not contact him for his side of the story.
Stressing that the government is not broke, the Accountant General expressed disappointment at the newspaper for failing to do the necessary checks before putting out the story.
But in a quick rebuttal, the editor of the Daily Guide newspaper, Fortune Alimi said the Controller and Accountant General is just being economical with the truth.
According to him, upon their checks from the Ministry of Finance, it was revealed that the Ministry was still working on the salaries of the workers.
The Daily Guide editor explained that some civil and public servants who spoke to the newspaper said even though they had received their pay slips, their bank accounts remained uncredited.
He stressed that some public and civil servants were frustrated and disappointed over the non-payment of their salaries considering the four-day holiday break beginning Friday.
“Most people are going for this long weekend without any salary in their pocket because they went to the bank and there was no money in their bank accounts”, he added.
Fortune Alimi opined that the Daily Guide was not out for mischief but to bring to the public domain the challenges government was facing in raising funds to pay workers.
