Top Ugandan drivers are yet to register for the KCB Pearl of Africa Rally 2011. The event, the fifth on the Africa Rally Championship (ARC) calendar, also counts towards the East Africa Rally Championship. It is set for July 15-17 in Kampala, Mukono and Buikwe districts. Registration closes Sunday.

David Bitalo, the treasurer of the event, revealed John Lumu is the only local driver to have registered. “Around 20 local drivers have picked the registration forms. Although they haven’t returned them, it’s a good sign that they will participate in the event,” Bitalo said. Each driver pays $150 (Shs375, 000) to register.

Meanwhile, four foreign drivers Jammie Whyte (Zimbabwe), winner of the event last year, and Alain Dethise (Belgium) have sent their entries.

The Madagascar pair of Fredrick Rakotomanga and Jean Yves Ranarivelo have also confirmed. Whyte and the two Madagascans took part in last weekend’s KCB Safari Rally in Kenya. KCB Bank are the main sponsors of next month’s event. They are joined by Coca-Cola, Iway Communications, Shell and Hotel Africana as co-sponsors.
