Roberto Di Matteo is reportedly set to be given the assistant manager’s job at Chelsea.

The Guardian are reporting that the 41-year-old coach will be announced in the role on Wednesday morning when new manager Andre Villas-Boas reveals his backroom staff.

The Italian spent six years at Stamford Bridge, signing from Lazio in 1996 and staying until his forced retirement from injury as a player in 2002.

As well as winning the FA Cup twice with the Blues, he tasted success with the club in both the League Cup and the Uefa Cup Winners’ Cup.

His first FA Cup victory came after scoring from 30 yards out only 42 seconds into the final against Middlesbrough in 1997.

Di Matteo was sacked as manager of West Brom in February amid a run of poor results and form.

However, his squad’s early season form was praised and he earned plaudits for guiding the club back to the Premier League in his first season in charge.

He spent a year at MK Dons before his move to The Hawthorns, leading them to the League One play-offs, but he was unable to win promotion to the Championship after a third-placed finish.
