Parliament Approves the New Prime Minister

Mogadishu — The transitional federal parliament of Somalia on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved the newly appointed Somali American prime minister.

After meeting in Mogadishu’s parliament house with the presence of 443 lawmakers, the speaker of Somali parliament, Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adam said that 437 MPs gave their vote of confidence to new Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, 4 refused and two MPs refrained from voting.

After the announcement of vote results, the prime minister, Sheikh Sharif Sheikh spoke at parliament meeting and thanked the MPs for their vote of confident they gave to his premier.

Also, Dr. Ali addressed at session, and said he is very happy and will form new government as soon as possible, adding that his government will act quickly to do more the currently humanitarian and political situation that the nation is in.

However, Dr. Abdiweli Mohamed Ali is Somali-American economist. He is a Harvard University graduate and a former professor of economics at Niagara University in New York. He is originally from the Puntland region in northeastern Somalia.

Mr. Ali will be the second Somali-American to be name as Somali prime minister.

Ali, who was the deputy prime minister and the minister of planning and International cooperation, replaces Mohammed Abdullahi Mohammed Farmajo who resigned recently to comply with the so-called Kampala Accord that extended the government’s mandate for one year.
