Chief executive of newly promoted Premier League side Norwich City David McNally has rejected claims that they were turned down by Peterborough United striker Craig Mackail-Smith, in favour of a move to Leicester City.

The Canaries were interested in a move for the 27-year-old forward earlier this year, but McNally has moved to deny that the club followed up their interest, with Mackail-Smith expected to complete a £3 million move to Leicester this week.

“For the record, CMS Mackail-Smith did not turn down Norwich City, despite what Posh chairman Barry Fry might say. Our interest ended in March,” he said on Twitter.

With Norwich out of the race, only West Ham and QPR represent a challenge to Leicester’s bid to sign Mackail-Smith, although Fry revealed the striker is due to hold talks with the Foxes in the coming days.

“We have accepted a bid from Leicester,” he said.

“Their manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is out of the country at the moment, but was due to speak to Craig over the weekend.

“I have had several conversations with West Ham, but we have turned down their bid. I am certain they will be back.

“Craig is facing a tough decision. He turned down Norwich and he has now turned down QPR.

“Craig met QPR manager Neil Warnock and was impressed with him, but he wanted assurances that Neil would still be manager at the start of the season and didn’t get them.”
