20 June 2011 Luanda — Over one hundred children will compete as from 25 of June, in Luanda school championship, in representation of various education institutions, in sports like soccer, handball, basketball, volleyball and athletics. The information was presented to Angop by an official of the Ministry of Education in charge of exercise, sports and extra school activities, Sara Tavares. She explained that the winners of each category will represent the province in the national school games, scheduled for August, in Namibe Province

Port-Harcourt — Even as most states which have arrived for the 17th National Sports Festival continue to battle with their accommodation problems, the battle for medals will not continue to wait as sporting hostilities will commence today at the designated centres.

Trustsports gathered yesterday that three events, namely basketball, Volleyball and cycling will be the curtain raisers as others sports would take their turns subsequently.

As at the time of filling this report, the technical committees of volleyball and basketball were meeting to come out with the required fixtures but a member of the media sub-committee said the cycling event would commence at the Aggrey road in Port-Harcourt city.

Meanwhile, a look at the schedule of events for the 17th National Sports Festival shows that Chief Adokiye Amiesimaka’s Stadium would be the hub of activities as athletics and Para-athletics, basketball, volleyball, handball, swimming and tennis events would be hosted there.

While football will be played at Liberation and Sharks Stadiums, as well as Uniport, wrestling, judo, gymnastics and traditional sports like langa, dambe, ayo, kokawa and abula will hold at the Civic Centre on Moscow road.

Hockey will be played at Liberation stadium just as weight lifting and Para-table tennis will hold at Agbani Daerego’s hall Bende Street, Opara.

Kung-fu, and kick boxers would slug it out at Port-Harcourt City Council hall, badminton would take the stage at indoor sports hall, Uniport Choba, as boxing will take place at Convocation Arena, Uniport Choba.

The other martial arts, karate and taekwondo will hold at PS hall, Uniport Choba, darts and golf holds at Port-Harcourt Club 1928 and Port-Harcourt Golf Course respectively.

In all, the 17th National Sports festival would feature 24 sporting events. Team Delta is the defending champions and will have to contend with its perennial rivals Edo, Lagos, and Rivers States.
