Nigeria: ‘Fadama Would Increase GDP, Food Security’

    The Task Team Leader (TTL) of the Fadama III project, Mr. Abimbola Adubi said the ongoing fadama III project would increase Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and make the country food secured if it continues to get attention and participation of young people and development partners.

    Speaking at the fourth general wrap-up meeting of the supervision mission of the World Bank and Federal Government inspection team across participating states holding in Abuja, Adubi said unemployment has been reduced through the programme.

    He said many people now find it convenient to use improved technology in farming and also take advantage of the links to markets availed in the programme.

    “Our fadama villages have been a success because they also encourage the use of wastes as inputs for other groups of the project. Through fadama, our farmers are able to cut down post harvest loses through various methods of packaging and preservation they were introduced to in the course of the programme,” he said.

    He said the World Bank and other development partners have continued to show interest and support for the programme because of its success across the states.

    The National Programme Coordinator of Fadama, Dr. Bukar Tijani said there has been a huge breakthrough in Nigeria as a result of the success of fadama III.

    Bukar encouraged the various State Project Coordinators to continue to show good leadership to their members.

    “Fadama would soon become a household name if we keep up our efforts in the direction of improving on the present successes recorded through the kind of leadership we deliver,” he said.

    He said young people are encouraged to handle the Information Communication Technology (ICT) component of fadama so that they can make their own contribution and to reduce unemployment in the communities.

    “There has been a remarkable result on ground and we would want everyone to work at sustaining it,” he said.
