Nigeria will host the International Federation of Surveyors Working Week in May 2013.
This was announced by the President of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, Surv. Yakubu Maikano, FNIS, at the 46th Annual general meeting of the Nigerian Institute of Surveyors (NIS) held in Calabar, Cross River State.
The theme of the annual general meeting is “Land Reforms in Nigeria: Issues and Challenges.”
The president said that members had just returned from this year’s World Conference in Marakesh, Morocco, where Nigeria posted the second largest member of delegates after the host country, a position which has been maintained in working weeks, regional conferences and congresses since 2006.
The IFS is made up of about 120 countries and they have indicated their willingness to attend the event in Abuja in 2013.
The body in Nigeria, he said, comprises the Nigeria Institute of Surveyors (NIS), Nigerian Institute of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) and the Nigeria Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) on the one hand, and other members of the Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN) on the other.
He noted that the hosting right was not just a matter for surveyors, but another avenue to showcase Nigeria to the world, and called on federal and state governments to give full support towards making the event a huge success. On the issue of land reform which is one of the priorities of the present administration, Maikano observed that the primary objective of the land reform programme of the Federal Government was the opening up a land market in the country. He stated that the development of land as an economic capital could be used to drive the economy and eradicate poverty.
The Nigerian Institute of Surveyors pledged its commitment to helping towards actualising the set objectives of the land reform programme within the confines of their professional expertise and competence.
Maikano added that the institution had empowered and prepared its members through Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) courses to assist in implementing the programme.
