Nairobi — At least 2,350 Kenyans claiming to be victims of the 2008 post-election violence have applied to take part in the ongoing cases against the Ocampo Six at The Hague.
Those seeking either to take part or be compensated have until July 28 to submit their claims to the Court.
The case against Uhuru Kenyatta, Francis Muthaura and Hussein Ali, has attracted 550 participants, while the rest relate to William Ruto, Henry Kosgey and Joshua Sang, according to the International Criminal Court’s Pre-Trial Chamber II.
Judge Ekaterina Trendafilova asked the VPRS (Victims Participation and Reparations Section) to get extra information from the victims so that many complete applications are presented to the Chamber within the deadline.
“In the view of the Single Judge, such approach will enable the Chamber to manage victims’ applications in an effective manner without prejudicing the expeditiousness of the proceedings,” she said.
Victims of Kenya’s post-election violence, who wish to participate in The Hague proceedings, must prove that the harm they faced was caused by crimes handled by the Court.
