Nairobi — Sevens champions Mwamba meet Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad in the opening tie of the inaugural Homeboyz One-Night Stand 10-a-side tournament at Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday.

According to the draw done on Wednesday, Kenya Cup outfits Mwamba and Eric Shirley Shield’s (ESS) Blak Blad highlight Pool A.

They take to the grounds at 9am in the off-season derby that has drawn 16 teams to the scent of the Sh200,000 prize money.

Tournament director Paul “Pau” Murunga said festival sides Greenfields and Deejays, also in Pool A , will lock horns at 9.25am.

Launch their title assault

ESS and Mwamba Cup champions Homeboyz launch their title assault against University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine at 9.50am.

They highlight Pool B, which also has St Paul’s University and Oryx who will play at 10.15am.

It will be interesting to see the kind of challenge Kenya Cup champions Kenya Harlequin will provide for Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), Kenya Polytechnic University and United States International University-Africa (USIU-A) in Pool C.

Explosive affair

Pool D will be another explosive affair with Kenya Under-19 team Chipu, Mount Kenya University’s Stormers and Comras sampling one another’s strength.

The focus will particularly be on Chipu, who are preparing for the Confederation of Africa Rugby (CAR) Cup Championship that starts from July 21 in Harare where they are in Pool B alongside Tunisia, Morocco and Madagascar.

Pool A has hosts Zimbabwe, Namibia, Cote d’Ivore and Uganda.

Murunga said the knockout stage will get under way with the Plate semi-finals at 8am while the Main Cup final is expected shortly after 10am.
