A Malindi court has issued a warrant of arrest for a surety of an Italian facing charges of drug trafficking after the accused person failed to appear in court. Chief magistrate Lucy Gitari gave the orders for the arrest of Patrick Karisa Kalama after Fabio Pompili failed to appear in court.

Pompili was charged that on December 6 2010 at the Kenya Revenue Authority offices in Malindi was found trafficking in and transportation narcotics contrary to Section A of the Narcotic Act.

Lawyer James Mouko, standing in for the accused, said attempts to reach the surety went futile and asked the court to decide. “I called the surety but could not be reached,” said Mouko. The magistrate issued a warrant of arrest to the surety and set the case for mention on July 7.

Elsewhere, a middle-aged man was yesterday charged with two counts of robbery with violence and assault at the Malindi Law Courts. Mohamed Sharif Alui appeared before chief magistrate Gitari and denied having used violence to rob Sh29 and assault a woman at Hurara village in Tanadelta district.

Prosecuting chief inspector Paul Okinda told the court that on June 20, the accused jointly with others not before the court while armed with AK47 rifles robbed Geoffrey Ronono of Sh29. He also said the accused at the same area assaulted Dola Orah thereby occasioning her actual bodily harm. The accused who was represented by lawyer Mouko pleaded not guilty to the charges.
