Connor Wickham is set to complete a medical at Sunderland on Wednesday ahead of a move from Ipswich Town.

According to the Press Association, the striker will travel to the north-east after the club made an offer in excess of £8 million for the 18-year-old.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has not hidden his interest in the Portman Road youngster but the Black Cats look set to pip the Reds to the signing of the forward.

Merseyside is rumoured to be the Hereford-born teenager’s first-choice move despite the probability he would play far fewer games than on Wearside.

But the promising Under-21 international looks set to become the latest young Englishman to command a high transfer fee this summer, following in the footsteps of Phil Jones and Jordan Henderson.

Although only 18, Wickham has made 72 appearances for Ipswich – 35 of those coming from the bench – and scored nine times in last season’s Championship campaign.

Sunderland have been looking to boost their attacking options as Darren Bent was sold to Aston Villa for £24m in January, Danny Welbeck returned to Manchester United after his year-long loan spell and Fraizer Campbell will spend much of the new campaign sidelined through injury.

South Korean forward Ji Dong-Wong is believed to have visited the country to discuss terms with Steve Bruce ahead of a prospective move to the Stadium of Light from K-League side Chunnam Dragons.

Birmingham City midfielder Craig Gardner is another expected signing for the Black Cats, who finished 10th in the Premier League last season.
