Nairobi — A senior state counsel was on Wednesday charged with soliciting for and receiving a bribe of Sh25,000.
Mr James Makura denied before Nyeri chief magistrate Stella Muketi that he solicited for a bribe of Sh50,000 from Mr Peter Chaina Magere in return for a recommendation for prosecution in a case referred to him by the Criminal Investigation Department.
He also denied a charge of receiving Sh25,000 from Mr Magere at the Nyeri Provincial Commissioner’s headquarters on June 22.
Through his lawyer, Mr Koin Lompo, he applied for copies of the witness statements and the charge sheet. The lawyer also applied for reasonable bond terms.
“We would like to apply for bond on reasonable terms. The accused had been given a police bond of Sh50,000 and abided by the terms they set. He is also a senior state counsel with a fixed abode,” he said.
Ms Muketi released him on Sh50,000 cash bail, and ordered that he be supplied with copies of statements, charge sheet and any other documentary evidence.
The case will be heard on August 24.
